First of all I would like to welcome you to our new website and our first ever blog post. I’m Charlie Vaughan and I’m one of the Directors at Educate Training. I was diagnosed with Dyslexia when I was in primary school. Finding out that I was dyslexic early on in life enabled me to forget about why I found certain things difficult and concentrate on coping strategies. I have always taken the view that if I can’t solve a problem one way, find another rout!
I have been using Assistive Technology ever since I was diagnosed, I remember using Dragon Naturally Speaking throughout school (it has improved a huge amount since, trust me!) and when I went to University I was armed with all the latest assistive software and hardware and was provided with training (These included: Dragon Naturally Speaking, TextHelp Read and Write Gold, Inspiration, dictaphone, headset and a foot switch) . This assistive technology is one of the tools I use to get around my Dyslexia. It’s not the only tool, there are lots of coping strategies that I have been taught throughout the years that I use every day. These strategies are priceless but it’s the Assistive Technology that enables me to get on with my work and forget about my dyslexia and concentrate on the job in hand.
In later posts I will explore different disabilities and how particular Assistive Technologies can help, from Dyslexia, to the Visually Impaired. I will provide useful information and links on each subject and try and show how assistive technology can make you more independent and able to get on with what you do best.
